Members of the Excelsior High School Class of 1981 have pledged one million Jamaican dollars to underwrite the cost of 2024 CSEC Exams fees for students at their alma mater. The commitment was made during a special presentation on Friday, November 10, 2023 when representatives visited the campus bearing gifts as part of its philanthropic efforts.
The latest gift came in the form of a cheque for $J$300,000 which Class representative, Carol Williams, presented to Principal Deanroy Bromfield as funding for 123 Math Workbooks for Excelsior’s Grade 9 students. This was part of the group’s legacy project from its 40th anniversary virtual celebration in 2021. Last year, the Class of ’81 donated 70 tablets to Excelsior to be utilized by students on campus to enhance E-Learning.
The decision to sponsor the Grade 9 students reportedly came at the urging of ’81 Class member, Darron Fraser, who is also an Excelsior math teacher. He is one of those who have been instrumental in the remarkable successes of Excelsior’s Grade 9 and Grade 10 candidates in the regional CXC Mathematics Examination in recent years.
According to organisers of the program, the exam initiative will be reviewed after a year with a view to deciding whether or not it will be an annual commitment or a one-off initiative. Excelsior’s Class of 81 is one of the groups renowned for their unwavering commitment to the welfare of students at their beloved alma mater. This most recent initiative further cemented that burgeoning reputation.
