The Excelsior Eagles upended rural champions, Manchester High, in thrilling fashion on Saturday, May 31, in a 32-run win in the All-Island T20 cricket contest at the Sir P Oval in Clarendon, to claim their third title of the season. Excelsior had earlier won the urban Grace Shield as well as the T20 titles.
SCORES: XLCR 245-2 (David Dewar 138 n.o, Justin Adlam 53 n.o. and Jamare Daley 45) Manchester 213-10 (Jovaine Willaims 2-30 Tarique Forbes 2-35 Demarco Scott 2-26).
After being sent in to bat, Excelsior, led by premier batsman, David Dewar, pummeled the Manchester High attack to all corners to mount an impressive score of 245-2 in their allotted 20 overs. Dewar received handy support from Adlam and Daley as Excelsior cruised to what was thought to be an unassailable score.
Manchester High had other ideas, as they put up a remarkably stout resistance to come within a hair’s breadth of overhauling the Excelsior total. In the end, the indomitable Eagles held their nerves to emerge victors in a hard-fought contest and further underscored their claim to being the foremost schoolboys cricket team in Jamaica.
Kudos to Coach Kirkland Bailey, Asst Coach Clifford Bailey, captain Demarco Scott and the entire Excelsior cricket programme as Principal Deanroy Bromfield will be forced to make room in Excelsior’s bulging trophy cupboard for yet another cricket trophy.
